Best Practices for Accessible Marketing Materials

In 2024, the Department of Justice issued a rule requiring state and local governments to make their websites and mobile apps accessible. All marketing materials—including websites, documents, emails, maps, ads, and social media—must meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Compliance deadlines are April 24, 2026, for public entities over 50,000 people and April 26, 2027, for smaller entities and special districts.

 

Join the MRPA Marketing & Communications PLC virtual meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 10 to 11:00 am, for tips and reminders on creating accessible social media, newsletters, email, and flyers. Share resources you have found useful, discuss how your agency is managing the transition, and ask questions and get advice from marketing peers across the state.
