Description


The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. Prince George's County is also responsible for developing and delivering the County's public recreation programs. The Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, is seeking Principal Parks/Facility Maintenance Worker-CDL.

The Arts and Cultural Heritage Division coordinates and manages four arts facilities; five historic rental properties; the Prince George’s Equestrian Center at The Show Place Arena; community arts services; youth and teen arts services; art exhibitions; visual and public art for Commission and Department facilities; and other programs serving County arts organizations, artists, and residents. Programs include art camps; visual and performing arts classes and events; teen art initiatives; art exhibitions; performances in music, dance, and theatre for all ages; touring performances for school children; a community park summer music series and festival, Shakespeare in the Parks; artist studios; rental facilities for arts and non-arts organizations; artist residencies; and rental of historic sites for social functions. The Division staff coordinates various cultural heritage events including Hispanic Heritage Month and, Black History Month programs and poster internships; Asian Pacific Heritage Month programs and receptions; the Celebrate Africa festival; etc.

This position is located at The Show Place Arena/Prince George's Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, MD and requires knowledge of ground keeping and facility maintenance, carpentry, equipment operation, and equipment maintenance. A CDL license with Tanker Endorsement is a must and is required to operate a water truck.

The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 2:45pm. There will be occasions when the incumbent will be required to work evening and weekend shifts to meet the needs of the facility and for events.

Salary Range, based on experience, is $55,000.00 to $65,000.00.

Key Responsibilities:

The Principal Parks/Facility Maintenance Worker-CDL is responsible for a range of tasks to maintain the grounds and facilities at an equestrian venue. Primary duties include but are not limited to: groundskeeping and facility upkeep such as mowing, trimming, trash collection, and erosion control. The Worker will also handle routine and emergency carpentry and structural repairs, including maintaining stalls, fences, and bleachers. The role involves operating and maintaining various heavy equipment, including Bobcats, loaders, tractors with attachments, dump trucks, and water trucks. In addition, the Worker will assist with snow removal from parking lots and walkways during winter conditions and ensure proper maintenance of equipment, including lubrication and repairs. The Worker will also support special event setup, monitoring, and cleanup of all areas and equestrian stalls to maintain a safe and clean environment. Effective collaboration with other staff and supervisors is vital to ensure the venue is ready for ongoing equestrian activities and seasonal changes.

A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in grounds and facility maintenance, particularly in road/grounds maintenance. 

Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements or the ability to acquire one within six (6) months of appointment.


Examples of Important Duties


  • Set-up and/or move required items in accordance with site plans and in a safe/timely manner
  • Monitor events while in progress, provide courteous services to patrons and ensure a safe/clean environment during the event
  • Monitor and collect trash during the event and restore the site to pre-event conditions after the event has ended
  • Conducts maintenance, cleaning and counts of stalls, campers and vendors during equestrian events
  • Experience with park or facility maintenance operations
  • Knowledge of landscaping, pesticide application, and basic carpentry
  • Familiarity with equine behavior and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment during events


Minimum Qualifications


  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  2. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years. 
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position. 
  5. Pass Commission medical examination.
  6. Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including: 
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment; 
    • Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Applicator certification; and 
    • National Playground Safety Institute certification.
