Description

The Sports & Youth Services Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture takes pride in the quality and variety of programs and services it provides to the community and seeks passionate and dedicated individuals who can contribute to this well-deserved reputation. We are accepting applications for an experienced professional to manage and lead our Sports Team that plans, organizes, and executes a variety of athletic and sports programs, activities, events, and services for youth, teens, and adults. Members of the Sports Team also work with the Summer Camp Team in planning and supervising camp programs each year.

The Sports Senior Program Supervisor identifies and analyzes community needs through public outreach and communication and develops, implements, and oversees high-level and enriching sports initiatives and programs that promote enjoyable and stimulating activities for people of all ages and abilities. The position requires extensive public contact and experience in community outreach, engagement, and inclusion, particularly with underserved populations. The position is responsible for recruiting, managing, training, and motivating a diverse group of staff members, including seasonal, part-time, and full-time employees, so the successful candidate must have an approachable management style and thrive on working collaboratively with others in order to lead and build an effective team and create a positive and product work environment.

The ideal candidate must have experience organizing and managing a wide variety of youth, teen, and adult sports programming, including seasonal recreation leagues, camps. clinics, trips, athletic field rentals, and various other sports activities and events, and will have a proven track record in using creative and innovative approaches and ideas to successfully deliver, optimize participation in, and promote expanded sports and athletic opportunities. Must have excellent leadership, communication (verbal and written), organizational, and time and resource management skills, and demonstrated skill in analytical review and evaluation of community needs, program success, and staff performance. The ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish is desirable. You must be able to work evenings and weekends as part of your core work schedule to meet sports program needs. Customer service inside and outside the organization must be a top priority, with special emphasis on the delivery of quality programs to the public.

Starting salary for this position is negotiable within the target hiring range ($74,000 - $84,000), and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Job Functions

What you will do with us:

  • Develop strategies to enhance and expand youth, teen, and adult sports and athletic offerings; evaluate and assess the effectiveness and efficiency of programs through customer engagement; implement improvements to meet community needs, in accordance with strategic and operational plans.
  • Facilitate sports program planning process; analyze current offerings and develop creative program options to meet community needs; review and assess policies, staffing levels, registration, inclusion program, and facility use and make recommendations for improvements; develop best practices for efficiency and productivity.
  • Recruit, hire, motivate, and manage staff; foster a collaborative culture; organize and lead training for site and officiating staff. 
  • Communicate and model operating procedures to ensure a high level of customer service and ensure a quality customer experience.
  • Develop and monitor assigned program budgets to meet fiscal objectives, including determining program operating expenses, fees, and part-time staff pay rates.
  • Coordinate marketing efforts to ensure accurate and effective promotion of programs, events, and activities.
  • Seek new community resources; develop collaboration and sharing of best practices with sports and athletic groups and organizations.
  • Evaluate athletic facilities and make recommendations for development of new facilities  and/or updating of existing facilities to meet the needs of the targeted population.
  • Establish and implement policies and procedures for the use of City facilities by outside groups.  Including but not limited to developments and maintenance of agreements and contracts.
  • Participate and be involved with local, regional, national, and international sport organizations.
  • Develop and oversee training programs for full time, part time and volunteer staff.

Qualifications

What you will need to be considered:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management/Administration, Therapeutic Recreation, Sports Management, Physical Education, or other closely related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant paid, professional sports programming and management experience, including experience managing and motivating diverse staff.
  • Knowledge of and experience with operating sports/athletic leagues, camps, and clinics in the state of Maryland, COMAR regulations, therapeutic recreation, and inclusive services (preferred).
  • Knowledge and understanding of sports/athletic trends and knowledge of sports organizations and other resources.
  • Proven leadership and management skills.
  • An effective and straightforward communicator.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with children and adults.
  • Demonstrated effective conflict resolution and sound decision-making skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish desirable.
  • An understanding of the needs of an ethnically and economically diverse community.
  • Solid technology skills (Microsoft Office, specialized software for registrations and scheduling or financial/recreation management).
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (may be obtained through the City upon hire).
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties.

This is a full-time salaried "exempt" position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week (not eligible for overtime compensation under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the City's personnel regulations). The position requires working evening and weekend hours to meet program needs. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.
