Description


The Southern Recreation & Leisure Services Division is seeking an energetic and creative Recreation Specialist to lead the development and implementation of innovative teen and young adult programs throughout Prince George’s County. This role is ideal for a motivated professional who is passionate about youth engagement and skilled in creating high-impact recreational experiences. The Recreation Specialist will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering diverse programming opportunities that are fun, engaging, educational, and culturally relevant to youth ages 10-24.

This position will play a key role in overseeing mobile recreation services, supporting large-scale division-wide events, collaborating with internal and external partners, and marketing programs tailored to teens and young adults.

Please note that the salary above represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for these positions is $60,849 - $84,308 . Salary is commensurate with experience. 
 


Examples of Important Duties


  • Design, implement, and evaluate teen and young adult programming aligned with the Division’s strategic goals.
  • Hire, train, and supervise intermittent staff to operate the Skate Mobile and Game Activity Truck, ensuring consistent and quality service delivery.
  • Manage schedules, equipment, and logistics for mobile recreational units across the division.
  • Lead the planning and execution of large-scale divisional events for teens and young adults (e.g., Safe Summer, Teen Fest, Game Nights, Skate Parties).
  • Develop innovative and relevant program themes that support social development, leadership, health & wellness, arts, and community engagement.
  • Collaborate with internal divisional teams to enhance teen and young adult programming at community centers and regional events.
  • Coordinate with community partners, school officials, and local organizations to build meaningful relationships and co-sponsor events and activities.
  • Assist in the creation and distribution of promotional materials, flyers, and social media content to boost program visibility and attendance.
  • Track attendance, feedback, and outcomes to measure program impact and inform future offerings.
  • Support grant and sponsorship efforts that expand programming capacity and innovation.
Position Expectations:
  • Consistently produce a calendar of dynamic programming geared toward teens and young adults.
  • Ensure mobile unit operations meet safety and service standards, including proper staffing and maintenance.
  • Demonstrate creativity and cultural awareness in program design and execution.
  • Develop annual and seasonal event plans with measurable goals, timelines, and budget projections.  These results will be included in an annual report that will be submitted. 
  • Maintain strong communication with community center staff to ensure programs are cohesive and well-supported across locations.
  • Attend community events, school visits, and local meetings to promote programs and increase visibility.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages teen voice and leadership.
  • Use data and feedback to evaluate success and adjust programming as needed.


Minimum Qualifications


  1. Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, Sports Management, Leisure Studies, Physical Education or any related field. 
  2. Two (2) years of recreation, sports administration/management, physical education, leisure services or other related professional experience.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years. 
  4. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
