We are pleased to welcome guests to our Black History Month Speaker Series session on February 8, 2024 with Dr. Autumn Saxton-Ross, Chief Education & Equity Officer of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Many associate the National Parks with President Teddy Roosevelt, but it was actually President Woodrow Wilson who signed the act that created the National Park Service in 1916. Dr. Saxton-Ross will share her personal and professional journey built on a love of public health, parks, and the complicated history of Blacks and green space.

Autumn Saxton-Ross, PhD, developed a love of the outdoors first through her grandmother’s yard and then exploring city parks with her family in her hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. Now a resident of Washington, D.C. and a mom of two, she is the Chief Education & Equity Officer at the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

She started her career as an elementary school Health and PE teacher in D.C. Public Schools. After receiving graduate degrees in Health Education and Sociology, she worked in various positions that placed her at the intersection of health, equity, and parks. Most recently, she served as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director and Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Lead for NatureBridge. Prior to that she held positions in non-profits, health, and recreation departments. Autumn is a connector who actively seeks out ways to build bridges between seemingly disparate people, opportunities, and ideas.
